Greening Financial Sector »
People | Planet | Prosperity
The financial sector today faces
unprecedented challenges and opportunities as the economic and financial
landscape changes across the continents and the environmental concerns get
mainstream attention worldwide. There is now a strong consensus among the key
stakeholders that the financial industry needs a fundamental change. It needs to
embrace sustainability in a holistic manner so that a stable, resilient and more
just financial services sector can emerge.
However, incorporating social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability whereas equal weight is given to all these three pillars is one of the biggest challenges that the financial institutions face today. There is a need for stakeholders to get together for dialogue, sharing knowledge and ideas, exchanging approaches, discussing best practices, networking and developing synergies to address the common risks, challenges and opportunities emerging in a fast changing world.
An international forum – The Global Sustainable Finance Conference - to address the emerging challenges faced by the financial services industry was launched in 2011 by EOSD and the Association of Development Financing Institutions in Asia and the Pacific (ADFIAP)* in cooperation with the City of Karlsruhe under the auspices of the World Federation of Development Finance Institutions (WFDFI)**. It was also endorsed by the United Nations Environment Program Financial Institutions (UNEP FI). In addition, the Global Sustainable Finance Network and the Karlsruhe Sustainable Finance Awards were also introduced.
